Description:
Sailor 1911 King of Pen - Naginata Togi Nib - Ebonite Fountain Pen - Umesaki is meticulously crafted with a 21K gold KOP Naginata Togi nib and Chirashi technique. "Chirashi" (scattering) technique is produced when colored ebonite is layered and then smoothed down to create a mesmerizing striped effect.
As with other models in this annually released Ebonite series, the body's design is inspired by a masterpiece of traditional Japanese art, expressed with colored ebonite. This year's model is our interpretation of "Plum Estate in Kameido" by Hiroshige Utagawa as published in the "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". Regarded highly by the world, as evident in Vincent van Gogh's reproduction "Flowering Plum Tree", Sailor has brought the beloved image to life with UMESAKI.
Plum Estate in Kameido was a plum orchard situated behind Kameido Tenjin Shrine, that became famous for "Garyubai", meaning a plum tree shaped like a sleeping
dragon. It was a hugely popular sightseeing spot in spring, even known to be cherished by Yoshimune Tokugawa, the 8th Shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The portrayal of sightseers enjoying the view from beyond the fence is testimony to the estate's popularity. Depicting closer objects as close-ups and farther objects in
smaller size was Hiroshige's preferred composition. He also succeeded in giving the tree a convincing woody texture by layering paint.
About Hiroshige Utagawa (1797-1858):
Renowned Ukiyo-e artist of latter Edo period. Born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1797, he trained in the Utagawa school of Ukiyo-e art, beginning with portraits of Kabuki actors and Samurai warriors. Later on in his career, he was influenced by Hokusai Katsushika and turned to landscape portrayal. His lyrical expressions of landscapes published in compilations such as "The 53 Stations of Tokaido", "The 69 Stations of Kisokaido" and "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo", created a new genre of Ukiyo-e art.

Sailor was founded in 1911. The founder Kyugoro Sakata was given a fountain pen by a friend returning from the UK after studying at the Royal Navy. He was inspired and decided to start making fountain pens in Japan. Sailor became the first fountain pen company in Japan, and earned many more firsts in Japanfirst ballpoint pen in 1948, first ink cartridge in 1954 and first brush pen in 1972, etc.
In the 1970s, Sailor made a popular beginner fountain pen, "Candy," that sold more than 15 million within a few years. However, the number of the fountain pen users were declining as ballpoint pens became more mainstream.
In 1981, Sailordecided to go in the opposite direction from their "Candy" pen and began focusing onproducing a higher standard series, which is the 1911 series we see today. Their focus on making a higher standard provides a great foundation for their later series of pens. Today, Sailor makes one of the most diverse lines of nibs, some of which are designed forspecificwriting purposessuch as writing musical notes toone that is best for character writing.
The 1911 offers a great balance and a smooth writing experience. The pen writes with a slight but satisfying feedback and it fits perfectly in the hand.
