Ink Institute developed their line of Vintage Grey Mixer inks as a fun way of experimenting with inks and creating your own shading inks. You can fill your pen with the Vintage Grey Mixer ink, each of which comes in a light blue, purple, green or brown color that encourages another ink to shade in this direction. To use it, you take your pen that is filled with the mixer ink and dip the tip of your nib slightly in another boldly colored ink. As you touch your nib to your paper, at first you will see just the color that you dipped your pen into, but with a few more strokes, you will begin to see beautiful shading occur. Since you are only dipping your pen, it will not be an everlasting effect, but you can dip again and again, and continue to experiment with which combinations work best.
